The single MOST important thing you can do to help your child succeed is to make sure he/she practices oral reading every day.

Ask questions and discuss different elements of the story. Talk about characters, setting, favorite parts of the story, feelings.

Practice high frequency sight words using flash cards. Repetition brings recognition of these words, which in turn builds fluency.
Encourage your child to use decoding strategies.
